Revitalizing Chatham County Courthouse Acoustics

The Chatham County Courthouse in Savannah, Georgia, underwent a significant renovation to enhance both its aesthetic appeal and acoustic performance. Commercial Acoustics was tasked with implementing a solution that would address the challenges posed by the building’s large public spaces and traditional design, ensuring that modern acoustic standards were met without acoustical panels savannah compromising the courthouse’s historic character.

The renovation focused on key areas such as the courtrooms, lobby, and atrium. In the courtrooms, custom perforated wood paneling was installed. These panels, featuring an MDF core with a stained veneer face, were mounted slightly off the wall to create a cavity for fiberglass insulation. This design not only provided a seamless and high-end appearance but also achieved an impressive Noise Reduction Coefficient (NRC) of 0.90, effectively reducing sound reflections and enhancing speech intelligibility.

In the expansive lobby and atrium areas, horizontally mounted perforated wood planks were utilized. Similar in material to the courtroom panels, these planks extended across all four floors of the courthouse. Behind each plank, high-density fiberglass was installed to absorb reflected sound and reduce echo, contributing to a more comfortable and acoustically balanced environment.

To further refine the acoustic environment, fabric-wrapped panels were added above the wood paneling in the courtrooms. These panels, finished in a neutral greige fabric, absorbed mid and high frequencies, controlling echo and ensuring that speech remained clear and intelligible throughout proceedings.

The integration of these acoustic treatments was carried out with meticulous attention to detail, ensuring that the solutions complemented the courthouse’s traditional design elements. The result is a harmonious blend of form and function, where modern acoustic performance meets the dignified aesthetic of a historic civic building.

This project exemplifies how thoughtful acoustic design can enhance the functionality of public spaces while preserving their architectural integrity. By addressing acoustic challenges with tailored solutions, the Chatham County Courthouse now provides a more conducive environment for legal proceedings and public gatherings, reflecting a commitment to both tradition and innovation.
